Current Projects

Currently, I am working on several projects and papers related to early childhood education and development.

Projects

Statewide Use of Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (ECMHC)

  • During fall 2020, our team co-wrote a study on the feasibility of implementing a statewide model of early childhood mental health consultation in collaboration with state and national experts for the Virginia Department of Education and general assembly (HJ 51, available here).
  • Beginning in 2021, our CASTL team has worked with partners at the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and Virginia Infant Toddler Specialist Network (VA ITSN) to pilot a model of EMCHC in one region of the state. The pilot is now in year 2 (2022-2023). The goal of the project is to support programs, teachers, and families to promote young children’s positive development and prevent the use of exclusionary discipline in early childhood settings. Findings from this pilot will inform the potential expansion of ECMHC across the state.
  • You can read more about findings from Year 1 (2021-2022) in our brief published here, and from Year 2 (2022-2023) in our brief published here.

STREAMin3 Curriculum Implementation Scale-Up

  • The STREAM: Integrated, Intentional, Interactions (STREAMin3) is a comprehensive curriculum model for early childhood settings serving children birth to five. The curriculum model focuses on the development of five core skills (Relate, Regulate, Think, Communicate, Move) that form the building blocks for later learning and six STREAM skills (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, Math) to prepare children for kindergarten. The model includes a variety of activities and routines, coaching, assessments, and professional development for teachers of children from birth to age five. STREAMin3 is now a state-approved curriculum in Virginia. In partnership with VDOE, we are currently providing a variety of professional development to support implementation in over 4,000 classrooms in the 2023-2024 school year.
